What is Torghast and Why is it Important?

Torghast, Tower of the Damned is a side activity located in the center of The Maw. Torghast introduces a new type of gameplay with the release of Shadowlands: instanced dynamic content featuring new challenges every time you visit it, and rotating floor layouts and enemies. Torghast contains many levels as it becomes more challenging the further you progress up the tower.

Players are looking to improve their character power with the ressources awarded in Torghast: Currencies like Soul Ash, Soul Cinder and Cosmic Flux are essential to craft and upgrade Legendary Armor unique to Shadowlands.

Torghast is also the place where you can find the Runecarver, responsible for crafting those Legendary Armor.

Torghast can be run either solo or in a group up to 5 players. As you play trough Torghast, you will collect Phantasma, a currency that is exclusive to Torghast, and being used to gain Anima Powers, temporary abilities that increase your power within Torghast.

Leveling in Torghast

If you have atleast one maximum-level character, you can level up alternate characters in Torghast trough the Threads of Fate leveling system. This way, you can already earn said currencies before you reach maximum level.

How to Enter Torghast

After reaching level 60 and chosing your first Covenant, you will be offered a questline which takes you to The Maw. Once you complete the introductory questline, an entrance to Torghast will appear in the far back of Ve’nari’s Refuge.

Players who have completed Chapter 2 of the Covenant Campaign can speak with Highlord Bolvar Fordragon in Oribos to skip the Chapter entirely. This means for Alt’s they dont need to do the introduction to The Maw.

Torghast Layout

As soon as you enter Torghast, you will find yourself infront of 8 different Portals. You will find:

  • 6 Individual Wings, that reward Legendary crafting materials
  • Twisting Corridors, the endless mode for cosmetics
  • The Jailer’s Gauntlet, a new boss-rush mode that awards cosmetics
  • An area called Runecarvers Oubliette, where you can find the Runecarver to craft your Legendary Armor

All 6 wings, containing Legendary Crafting materials, are currently open permanently. Players have to complete a Level of Wing to climb up the tower. Currently, every Wing contains up to 16 Levels. It is not required to complete every level in every wing, Players will unlock a certain level of all Wings after completion of just one.

The Box of Many Things

The Box of Many Things is a talent progression tree within Torghast, Tower of the Damned, introduced in Patch 9.1, Shadowlands: Chains of Domination.

The Box of Many Things does not apply to Twisting Corridors.

This new talent system is fueled by Tower Knowledge, which you earn by completing Torghast runs and can then spend to earn talents in The Box of Many Things. Talents include all kinds of useful perks to help you succeed with Torghast runs, including reducing incoming damage, increasing output, add Blessings or remove Torments, increasing Anima choices, and opening access to Adamant Vaults, new floors with special challenges and unique rewards.

Tower Knowledge is rewarded at the end of your Torghast run, increasing in quantity the more score you had at the end of your run.

Running Torghast

As soon you decided which wing of Torghast, Tower of the Damned you want to attempt, you are prompted an overview of all the level you can run. Players need to complete the level with atleast 160 score points to proceed to the next level. Once you cleared a certain level in wing, you also unlock the next level on any other wing in Torghast.

Every level, also called Layer consists of 5 floors.

  • Every 3rd floor is a Break Room, that contains no enemies, but additional objectives and a Vendor that allows you to spend your Phantasma for additional Anima Powers, Consumables or even Cosmetics. You will also find a hologram of the boss you will be fighting on the 5th floor, closely positioned to the Vendor.
  • Every 5th floor is a Boss Room. There are no more enemies or difficult layouts of the map, but instead there is only 1 Boss that you have to defeat to finish your Torghast run. You will also find another Vendor in this floor where you can spend your last Phantasma, to be prepared for your fight.

At the Vendor, you are able to purchase randomly offered Anima Powers. Most of the times, you will be also able to buy the following items. You can also use your Phantasma to buy certain Cosmetics like Transmog, only obtainable on this Vendor.

Your first floor in Torghast has a pretty narrow path to the Exit. To advance to the next floor, you must first find the floor exit and defeat an Empowered Guardian.

The further you proceed, the more all floors turn from a narrow path into more maze-like labyrinths. To achieve a high score, in order to unlock the next level of the Torghast wing, you should clear as many objectives and kill as many mobs as fast as you can.

Bonus Objectives

In Torghast you will find multiple bonus objectives you can complete to earn additional score. You will in most cases rewarded with an extra Anima Power, or rewarded with Phantasma.

  • Ashen Phylacteries – These destructible objects can be destroyed by right-clicking on them, or you can cast a spell on them. They usually contain Phantasma and even Anima Cells.
  • Tormented Souls – Tormented Souls are scattered across Torghast. You can either free them or take their soulbound armaments. These include Partially-Infused Soul RemnantsTormented Souls, and Boiling Souls.
  • Spectral Bound Chests – You will also find Spectral Bound Chests in Torghast that are unlocked by finding Spectral Keys on the ground.
  • Lever Locked Chests – Sometimes, you will come across Lever Locked Chests and you must pull all the levers until you find out the correct combination. There are only 16 possible combinations. Opening the chest grants you one Anima Cell.
  • Quests – You will often find various Covenant members on certain floors. If one is nearby, the Runecarver will notify you of their presence. They may request help with defeating an enemy, finding a lost companion, or item, and upon completion, give you an Anima Cell.

Traps

Levels will also become more complex the higher you climb — the first few floors will have a simple layout, but higher up, you will be dealing with traps such as spike pits, scything pendulums, or cauldrons which spawn endless waves of exploding skeletons.

Blessings & Torments

Blessings are beneficial buffs and effects that can help make your Torghast run easier. Like Torments, Blessings will change daily and can have different impacts on you. The ability to gain Blessings in Torghast come from a perk through the Box of Many Things, the Torghast talent system. Depending on how many ranks invested in  Blessing of the Ancients, you can get anywhere from 1-3 random Blessings when you start a Torghast run.

Torments are a mechanic that serves as further difficulty increases in Torghast. As you progress through higher and higher floors, The Jailer will begin to notice your presence and make use of Torments to either empower his servants or weaken the players. Torments become stronger as you advance to higher floors.

Twisting Corridors

The Twisting Corridors is a special Torghast mode that offers players a different type of challenge compared to a regular Torghast run.

  • Twisting Corridors, like the normal Torghast wings, have their difficulty measured in layers. However, unlike normal Torghast runs, each layer of Twisting Corridors has 18 floors, instead of 5.
  • There are no rewards that increase player power in Twisting Corridors. However, achievements and cosmetic rewards are obtainable for completing each Twisting Corridor layer.

To unlock Twisting Corridors, players have to complete questline given by Highlord Bolvar Fordragon after completing the Covenant Campaign quest The Search for Baine

Jailers Gauntlet

Instead of long levels of trash with trash, traps, puzzles, and events, this fast and furious method is a series of quick boss fights in small packs.

The entrance to the Jailer’s Gauntlet is located on the far right end of the Torghast entrances, to the right of the entrance to Twisting Corridors. The Jailer’s Gauntlet is made up of 8 floors with 4 difficulty layers. Like other Torghast modes, you need to earn your way up levels, but progress is account wide. Your first character to do these on your account will have to start at Layer 1, no matter how high their iLevel is, and work their way up layer by layer. Subsequent characters will have access to whatever layers the other characters on your account have opened up.

In the Jailers Gauntlet, you will not find any Traps or Bonus Objectives, not even trash packs beyond a few that might spawn from portals. Because your Box of Many Things doesn’t apply, there are no Torments or Blessings.

Torghast Rewards

Completing Torghast will reward different Rewards, like Soul Ash, Soul Cinder or Cosmic Flux, additionally to Anima.
